Mount Oldonyo-Lengai
While the lava flow appears like a white water flowing streams and brownish mud they form into solidified lava crystals that reflect sharp sparks when hit by rays. The low gas content lava glows to extreme red-orange pool during the dark within the crater rim and around the solidified peaks of volcanic lava cones creating a spectacular display. The last minor explosions of Lengai are reported to have been witnessed by a group of touring climbers in the beginning October 2005. There is a beautiful camping base for climbers and hikers. Munge River water falls provides the most desired power shower after the tedious climb.

Lake Natron
Located in northern Tanzania, near the border with neighbouring Kenya, Lake Natron is situated north east of the Ngorongoro Crater. The landscape is dominated by Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano which is just south of Lake Natron. The lake has a maximum length of 56km and a width of 22km. Lake Natron is primarily fed by the Southern Ewaso Ng'iro River, and by hot springs that are rich in minerals.
As water cannot flow out of the lake, evaporation levels are very high, and this leaves behind natron (sodium carbonate decahydrate) and trona (sodium sesquicarbonate dihydrate). The high concentration of natron gives the lake extreme alkaline levels, and it is one of the deadliest lakes on the planet. The surrounding landscape is eerie due to its proximity to a deadly body of water, but it is rich with rare flora and fauna.
Although the lake is deadly to most animals, a unique ecosystem has developed in this harsh environment, creating fascinating opportunities for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.Lesser flamingos are Lake Natron’s most famous attraction. 75% of the world’s population of lesser flamingos were born at this lake. They amass at the lake between August and October to lay their eggs, and the eggs hatch during the wet season in November.
Ngare Sero Waterfall
A full-day and rewarding activity in the Lake Natron region is hiking to Ngare Sero Waterfall and back. This hike takes you up Ngare Sero Gorge, and at times requires you to scramble, climb, and walk through the water. But the water isn't ever very high – nothing above your hips. The gorge grows increasingly steep and narrow the nearer you come to the waterfall, and early and late in the day you can experience some very welcome shade from its walls.
When you reach the waterfall, you can swim in its pool, a great treat after hiking in such a hot region! This is also the time to eat your picnic lunch and marvel at this oasis.
For active types Tanzania has a lot to offer and this is one of the most dramatic hikes in East Africa as well as the amazing scenery there is also the chance to witness the changing lives of the Maasai in both Ngorongoro and Lake Natron.
